Continuing our coverage of the IJN's small combatants, we created a new KAIBOKAN! (escort) page to complement our SOKAITEI (minesweeper) and our KUSENTEI! (subchaser) pages. The new page will detail 46 of the IJN's named coast defense vessels, the convoys they escorted and, where applicable, their activities as repatriation ships. Also posted an update on the recent finding of midget submarine "M-24b" N of Sydney at Sydney. (Bob Hackett)

11/26/06 This is the year for finding lost subs! As we reported, first USS GRUNION (SS-216) may have been located, then WAHOO (SS-238) was officially determined to have been found, and now seven Australian scuba divers claim they found IJN "M-24b" N of Sydney. Reportedly, the midget submarine is in good shape, sitting upright on its keel in 70 m/230 feet of water.

This report follows a false claim made in 2005 that M-24b was found in Broken Bay, N of Sydney, but investigations by New South Wale’s Heritage Office confirmed that “finding” was just a lump of sand. 8/18/2006 This is the week for finding lost American subs! First, GRUNION and now today the Russian news agency ITAR-TASS reported that in July dive team “Iskra” from Vladivostok’s Far Eastern State Technological University found and photographed Cdr Dudley W. Morton’s USS WAHOO (SS-238). The wreckage lies in about 213 feet (65 meters) of water in La Perouse/Soya Strait between the Japanese island of Hokkaido and the Russian island of Sakhalin. WAHOO was lost on 11 October 1943 with all 79 hands as she returned from the Inland Sea on her seventh war patrol. In WAHOO’s honor, we are posting the TROM for CH-15, one of her principal antagonists, on our KUSENTEI! Page. (Bob Hackett)

7/31/2006 Sixty-four years ago today, LtCdr Mannert L. Abele's USS GRUNION (SS-216), while on her first war patrol, apparently was sunk by the armed cargo ship KANO MARU off Kiska, Aleutians. Two weeks prior to GRUNION's loss, LtCdr Abele torpedoed and sank subchasers CH-25 and CH-27 and possibly damaged CH-26. This Friday, 4 Aug '06, Abele’s three sons plan to launch a search for GRUNION using a towed side-scan sonar. More details have been posted by Bruce Abele on the GRUNION Blog.
